Family Maths Night
Thank you to the parents who attended our Maths Games Evening last night. Many games are fun to play and help your child gain number knowledge.
The refreshed curriculum is in its first year of implementation. Our staff have spent several professional development hours familiarising themselves with the changes and ensuring that we have systems and resourcing in place to deliver the best maths programme for every child at Riverview School.
Number knowledge is the foundation for maths education. Students need to be able to count, read numbers, write numbers, order numbers, and explain the place value of digits within a number. Knowing what number comes before or after a given number helps when adding or subtracting. Our math-a-thon covers the number knowledge needed at your child's current year level.
Here is an easy game to reinforce saying a number correctly - you will need dice to represent each digit in a number, eg, 2 dice for a 2-digit number. Roll the dice and say the number that you make. Can your partner make a bigger number with the same digits? This game becomes trickier with more dice.
Based on the refreshed curriculum, here is the progression of numbers that students should be able to work with according to their year level.

Maths Night Fun!

New Zealand Symphony Orchestra
The Year 6 Classes were fortunate to have members of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra visit their rooms and work with them to compose a piece of music. This was in preparation for the upcoming trip to the Turner Centre where all of our year 4, 5, and 6 students will be able to attend a NZSO concert called Signs of Nature.

Tumuaki Talk
Kia ora koutou, Greetings to all parents, whānau, students, and staff.
Board Elections: All schools in NZ hold elections for the Board of Trustees every three years. This group is elected to help govern the school. If you are interested in being nominated for the Board, please do not hesitate to contact me or the current Board of Trustees members. For further information, please visit HERE.
If you would like to attend a Board Meeting, we have one next Tuesday at 6:30pm. This will give you an indication of what to expect. Please email admin@riverview.school.nz if you are interested in attending; this will be passed on.
Last fortnight's polls: Thank you to all those who completed the quick polls last week. The questions were as follows:
(1) In Term Three, we are planning a free Hangi/Picnic. Would you come? 93/117 (78.1%) respondents said yes.
(2) If we organise an education evening with an expert such as Rob Cope (around digital safety for children), will you attend? 81/101 (72.97%) of respondents said yes.
We will look at the next steps in planning for these.
Education Evening / Session with Rob Cope: Yesterday, I met with Rob Cope, an expert in digital safety for children. We are looking to have an education session in the coming months. I will also contact other schools to ascertain their interest in collaborating on this important subject. Around 250 - 300 people are expected to attend this session for it to progress. We will share more information in the coming weeks.
Would you pay for a two-hour session about digital safety from an expert such as Rob Cope. He would share the dangers of technology / social media and empower parents to support them in managing this effectively; this would include a 12-month subscription Select up to 3 options Thank you
Pink Shirt Day: This Friday (tomorrow) we have our Pink Shirt Day, which looks at anti-bullying. This closely links to our HEARTWISE Values and Keeping Ourselves Safe. We are not raising any funds, so please do not bring a donation. We are holding our Pink Shirt Day to raise awareness of anti-bullying and linking this to our Values. Please talk with your tamariki about Anti-bullying, making the right choice and our Values of Honesty, Aroha, Whanau and Respect.
Upcoming Events: Please keep an eye on the online calendar as well as the newsletter for upcoming events. We are excited to have our Cross Country on Tuesday, 3 June at Kapiro Station again. Thanks to the PTA, who, this year, will give a free sausage to each child at the event (who is enrolled at school).
Connections: We are always happy to discuss your child’s progress, strengths, and areas for growth, to ensure they are fully supported to reach their potential. If you have any questions or would like to chat about your child’s learning, please don’t hesitate to contact their teacher. School reports will come home later in the term, and we will have Parent Interviews.
Religious Instruction: I met with the team from Launchpad, who run our weekly Bible in Schools Sessions at lunchtime. Due to the low numbers, they have decided to discontinue this. We wish our friends from Launchpad all the very best.
Room 1 Learning - Counting to 5, Adding to 5.

Reporting to Parents
At the end of the term, we will be sending home a progress report on your child's effort and attainment during the first half of 2025. This will be supported by whānau and kaiako hui to discuss your child's progress and next learning steps. The dates for these hui will be Wednesday, 25 June, from 3:30pm to 6:30pm and Thursday, 26 June, from 1:30pm to 6:30pm. Further information about how to book an appointment will be sent out closer to the time.
On Thursday, 26 June, school will close for instruction at 12:50pm. This means that students can be collected to go home with parents at this time. Those who remain at school will be supervised in the school hall. Afternoon buses will run at the regular times.

Policies and Procedures

The school works with SchoolDocs to maintain, update, and review our policies. SchoolDocs provides us with a comprehensive core set of policies, which have been well researched and follow the Ministry of Education National Administration Guidelines. The policies and procedures are tailored to our school, and the school supplies specific information such as our charter, and procedures for behaviour management, reporting to parents, etc.
SchoolDocs updates, modifies, or creates policies in response to changes in legislation or Ministry guidelines, significant events, reviews/requests from schools, and regular reviewing from the SchoolDocs team. Our Board of Trustees has the opportunity to view changes/additions and comment on them before they are implemented. We will advise you when policies are up for review and how you can take part in the review.
