Tumuaki Talk
Kia ora koutou, Greetings to all parents, whānau, students, and staff.
Tu Meke Tamariki: We have some absolutely outstanding tamariki who try their best in all they do. This last week we have seen year six children develop a Beyblades Club, Football, and Netball sessions for the juniors. The Aroha, Respect, and Excellence is being shown ... well done to our children.
Carpet Installation: Our carpet installation has been a long process; however, it is now complete, and all children are back in their classes. A huge thank you goes out to the tamariki and kaiako/teachers for the aroha and tolerance shown over the last few weeks.
Kapa Haka: Our Junior and Senior Kapa hapa Rōpū are busy training for the festival on Tuuesday 2 September. If your child has been selected, keep an eye out as information will come home. Please encourage your tamariki to practise at home also.
Quiz Night: The big night is coming up quickly. Make sure you get your team and book a table? It will be a night of fun, laughter and great company.
Late Arrivals: If your child is late, please ensure they come to the office to sign in. If they are not signed in and marked absent, the school is not notified that they are here, which can cause panic when a text is sent home asking where your child is. The first 15 minutes is an essential time for the children to settle for the day, and 15 minutes daily add up to a lot of missed learning.
Early Pick-up: If you collect your child early, and they won't catch the bus, please sign them out and let the office know, so we are aware that they are not on the bus. A lot of time is spent looking for children who are supposed to catch the bus, and have been collected, without anyone letting us know. When we are searching for children and calling parents, we delay the buses as they don’t leave until we give them the all clear.
Paid Union Meetings: This year is a pay negotiation year for teachers across Aotearoa. These negotiations are about more than just a pay rise. They are also about securing the best working conditions to benefit our students. The teachers' union, NZEI has called a paid union meeting on Tuesday 19 August for all members to attend. These meetings happen during school hours so they do have an impact on our classes.
To ensure that school runs smoothly and with minimal disruption, our teachers will attend meetings at different times during the day. There will be some classes doubling up for an hour or two during the day. Our lunch break will be slightly longer but other than that, school will be as 'normal' as possible. We thank you for your support.
PTA update: We have had some whānau members put their hand up to continue with the PTA. We are planning a meeting to elect the new committee officially. This meeting will be held in early Term 4.
Police Vetting: If you are hoping to help with a school trip or event this year, please pop into the office and collect a Police Vetting form. We will require two forms of identification (one photographic) to be able to process this. There is no cost to whānau to get vetted. Police Vetting forms last for three years.
Board Elections: It is fantastic that we have enough dedicated parents who have been nominated, and we are heading to an election. Good luck to all the candidates, and thank you to all for allowing yourselves to be nominated.
Congratulations to Wopkje Pekel-Gripstra, who will be the staff representative on the Board from 2025.
Quiz Night Tickets are ON SALE
Have you got your ticket yet? This event is being held in the school hall on Saturday 6 September. This will be a great night to quiz with your friends, meet new friends, and support our school. Tickets are $120 for a table of 10 players. We will be selling beer, wine, non-alcoholic drinks, and platters of nibbles throughout the night. There will be games and prizes. Tickets are available from the school office.

Daffodil Day - Friday 29 August

We will be holding a YELLOW day for Daffodil Day on Friday 29 August. We will be asking students to bring in coins to make coin trail stems for paper daffodils with all money being sent to the NZ Cancer Society. We hope you will support us with this worthwhile cause and start collecting coins for this event.
Below is the link to our page, if you want to get in early and donate, check it out! We will also be accepting cash donations at school.
Kapa Haka Festival - Tuesday 2 September

Years 5 and 6 Speech Competiton
Speech Competition time is upon us. Students in the senior school will be learning how to write and give a 3 minute formal speech as well as how to write and deliver a 90 second rap. Students will have the option to choose one of these methods of public speaking to present to their class. Only the 3 minute speech winners will be able to go on to the inter-school competition. Topics will be varied but they all must contain a message to the audience. Our school competition will include the best speakers and rappers from years 5 and 6 and this will be held on Wednesday 10 September. Class competitions will be held prior to this date. Teachers will share information via Class Dojo.
We know that speeches can be like cross country, something that seems optional and can be intimidating to some students. We are encouraging all students to write their speech or rap and then give it a go. For those who struggle to talk in front of an audience, we will give them some other options while encouraging them to participate.
