Special Visitor - Derek McKay playing the bagpipes.
As a celebration of our International Language Week and dress-up day, we were visited by Derek McKay, Piper Telfer's grandfather. He wooed the kids by playing a range of bagpipe tunes. For most, this was their first time seeing and hearing the bagpipes. What an excellent experience. Thank you, Derek, for coming and sharing this fantastic talent.

Tumuaki Talk
Kia ora koutou, Greetings to all parents, whānau, students, and staff.
International Languages Week: This week, we have been celebrating the nationalities and family backgrounds of our staff members and students. It has been eye-opening to see the vast diversity of nationalities of everyone. We believe it is essential that we all know and take pride in who we are and where we come from.
Yesterday, we had a dress-up day wearing attire from the countries where our whānau come from. This was amazing, and I saw so many amazing outfits. Please see the gallery below to see some of the diversity we have in our kura.
Thank you to the whānau who made contact and thanked us for celebrating this week, and for the impact it has had on their family, which has sparked many discussions about their origins. We appreciate the support.
Cross Country: On Tuesday, 3 June, we held our much-anticipated annual Cross Country event. Despite the overcast skies, it turned out to be a fantastic day for running. Congratulations to all the children who gave their absolute best in their races - it was great to see their determination and effort. The excitement at the start line and the pride on their faces as they crossed the finish line was great.
A special thank you goes out to everyone who contributed to making the event such a success for our students:
- Our amazing PTA, for taking on the big task of coordinating and serving sausages for the children
- The dedicated Riverview School staff for their organisation and support before, during, and after the event. Thank you to Dallas Andersen for making the day happen.
- Our wonderful parent volunteers, who gave their time to marshal the course, help with pack-up, and cheer on our tamariki
- A special thank you to Ian Leaf and his team from Landcorp for kindly allowing us to use Kapiro Station.
Once again, I would like to acknowledge our supportive whānau, whose encouragement means so much to the children and the school. Congratulations once again to all the runners, especially those who placed and went on to represent Riverview School at the inter-school competition.
Board of Trustees: Our next meeting is Tuesday 17 June at 6.30pm in the staffroom. All welcome.
Attendance:Yesterday, we looked at the attendance rates across the school. We will again be making contact with whānau to offer support in getting our tamariki to school regularly. Please review the attendance data pictures below for the school. Each school day, we have on average 92% of children attending school. Friday has the most significant number of absentees since the start of the year, with an average attendance rate of 89%. This equates to an average of approximately 40 children away each Friday.
Illness: While we want children to attend school regularly, it is essential for the health and well-being of everyone that they stay home if they are sick. Please notify the school office if a child is away for any reason, as failure to do so will result in them being automatically marked as truant.

Term One Attendance Data:

Term Two Attendance Data:
Interesting information on the data:
Good Attendance (less than 5 days off in a term): GOOD CHANCE OF SUCCESS: In Term 1 this was 74% / 290 students who attended school with less than 10 days off. This decreased to 79% / 314 students who attended school regularly (less than 5 days off in a term)
Worrying Attendance (up to 10 days absent in a term): LESS CHANCE TO MAKE PROGRESS: In Term 1, this was 20% / 79 students who attended school with less than 10 days off. This decreased in Term 2 to 15% / 58 students who attended school, having less than 10 days off in a term. 5 of the 58 had a holiday during term time. Illness was the next most significant contributor.
Concerning Attendance (up to 15 days absent in a term) - HARD TO MAKE PROGRESS: In Term 1, this was 3% / 13 students who attended school with up to 15 days off. This increased in Term 2 to 6% / 23 students who attended school, having up to 15 days off in a term. This was impacted by a slight reduction in the Serious Concern for attendance category; however, illness played a small part in the increase, and taking a Holiday during Term time had the most significant impact, with 12 out of 23 having a holiday during term time.
Serious Concern for Attendance (15 or more days absent in a term) - VERY HARD TO MAKE PROGRESS: In Term 1, this was 2% / 8 students who attended school with 15 or more days off. This has decreased in Term 2 to 1% of students who attended school with more than 15 days off in a term. Of the five in term two, two have had a holiday during term time.

Celebrating Our Diverse Ancestry at Riverview School
At Riverview School, we believe that every child’s identity, culture, and ancestry are taonga—treasures to be honoured and celebrated. Yesterday, we held a special day dedicated to learning about and embracing the rich and diverse backgrounds of our tamariki. It was a joyful and meaningful occasion where students proudly shared their heritage, stories, and traditions. Events like these strengthen our sense of belonging and unity, and remind us that our differences are what make our kura truly special.

Enrolment Schemes - Education and Training Act 2020 ss 71 - 75
Enrolment: As you will be aware, Riverview School (like KKHS and KKPS) has an enrolment scheme. This means that the school is required to adhere to a strict school zone. If people live outside this zone, then they are not entitled to enrol at Riverview School. At times, a family may live in the zone and move out after 6 months, a year or more. The enrolled child is still entitled to attend Riverview School; however, subsequent, unenrolled children are not automatically entitled to enrol. In this instance, we review enrolments for the following year, advertise available spaces, and hold a ballot. This occurs in September for the following year. We are not currently accepting out-of-zone enrolments, except for those who were selected through the ballot in 2024. We notified the school community in September 2024, held a ballot and offered the available spots. Please see below for further information on enrolment schemes.
What is an “enrolment scheme” and why do some schools have them?
If a school has an enrolment scheme, it must accept all students who live within the “home zone”. Students who live outside the zone can only attend the school if they secure a place under the scheme's rules. Out-of-zone students are selected by random balloting.
Schools can only have an enrolment scheme if it’s necessary to avoid overcrowding. Sometimes, more students want to attend the school than there are spaces available. An enrollment scheme is supposed to ensure that students are selected fairly and transparently, rather than having the school choose whichever students it wants.
How are out-of-zone students selected? Education and Training Act, Schedule 20, clause 2.
If you live outside the home zone of a school, whether you can go will depend on how many places the school has for out-of-zone students. The school has to follow this order of priority to fill out-of-zone places:
- children who are accepted into learning support programmes run by the school (for example, special education or a te reo Māori immersion class) (Riverview School don't do this)
- siblings of current students of the school
- siblings of past students of the school
- children of past students of the school
- children of school staff or of the school board
- all other children who apply.
For example, if there are not enough out-of-zone places to take all children from category 2, a ballot will decide which children in category 2 will get to go to the school.
Typically, if there is space, Riverview School holds a ballot for siblings of current students of the school.
What if we move out of the home zone later on? Education and Training Act, Schedule 20, clause 12.
The school board can review your enrollment if you move out of the home zone. The board must give your parents or guardians a “review notice” and provide them with a chance to explain the situation.
If a child has been with the school for a considerable time, the school will honour their enrolment; however, siblings must go through the out-of-zone process.
Can the school cancel my enrolment? Education and Training Act, Schedule 20, clause 13.
Yes, if the school has a proper reason to believe that:
- you gave false information (for example, an incorrect address), or
- used a temporary or extended family address to enrol. (A place which is not a permanent residence of the child).
- Riverview School would communicate with whānau first to gain a better understanding of the reason for incorrect information.
Reporting to Parents
At the end of the term, we will be sending home a progress report on your child's effort and attainment during the first half of 2025. This will be supported by whānau and kaiako hui to discuss your child's progress and next learning steps. The dates for these hui will be Wednesday, 25 June, from 3:30pm to 6:30pm and Thursday, 26 June, from 1:30pm to 6:30pm. Further information about how to book an appointment will be sent out closer to the time.
On Thursday, 26 June, school will close for instruction at 12:50pm. This means that students can be collected to go home with parents at this time. Those who remain at school will be supervised in the school hall. Afternoon buses will run at the regular times.
