Front of School

PINK FRIDAY IS EVERY DAY.
On Friday, 16 May, we turned the school PINK as we raised awareness about bullying.
We do not tolerate any form of bullying and spend time ensuring that our students are HEARTWISE, understanding inappropriate behaviours, how they affect others, and what they can do to bully-proof themselves.
We aim to empower students to stand up to those who are not being kind, to keep themselves safe and to find ways to avoid situations where bullying may occur.
Being able to deal with unwanted attention is a life skill. We want every Riverview School student to walk tall, feel confident in dealing with any unkind or inappropriate behaviour, and know how to either remove themselves from a situation or get help.
You will see posters around the school sharing the message about being bully-proof.

Tumuaki Talk
Kia ora koutou, Greetings to all parents, whānau, students, and staff.
The term continues to zoom by, with many learning and adventures being undertaken. We have completed the Keeping Ourselves Safe Programme with Constable Rob, which involved extensive discussion, learning, and increased awareness.
Recently, I was discussing education, learning, and schools in general with colleagues from other schools across the country. The discussion reinforced how lucky I am and the gratitude I have for being at Riverview, with its fantastic staff, tamariki, and community.
Thank you: Last week, Ali and his team from Keruru Development returned to school and spent time laying more bark at the front of the school, as well as removing the green waste and also cleaning the bus bay. The time was donated, as was the removal and disposal of the green waste, and the truckload of bark. A huge thank you goes to the following for the ongoing support:
- Ali and the team at Keruru Development for the time spent developing the front area.
- Mount Pokaka for the donation of the bark.
- Waipapa Landscapes for taking the green waste free of charge.
We truly appreciate the support.
Arts Rotation: This week, our Year 6 students started an Arts rotation. Each week, the children will participate in an area of the Arts. Each rotation will last three weeks, after which participants will move to another area of the Arts. The Year 5's are currently organising their rotations, which will start soon.
Rotary Dictionary Donation: Last week, our friends from Rotary visited the school to gift each Year 4 student their own dictionary. They also donated two Maori dictionaries. We are thankful for the ongoing support Rotary shows our tamariki and kura.
Cross Country: Next week on Tuesday, we are having our annual cross-country. Everyone is invited to celebrate the effort of all our children running. The PTA are running the BBQ and will give each enrolled student a free sausage.
Illness: While we want children to attend school regularly, it is essential for the health and well-being of everyone that they stay home if they are sick. Please notify the school office if a child is away for any reason, as failure to do so will result in them being automatically marked as truant.
Enrolment: As you will be aware, Riverview School (like KKHS and KKPS) has an enrolment scheme. This means that the school is required to adhere to a strict school zone. If people live outside this zone, then they are not entitled to enrol at Riverview School. At times, a family may live in the zone and move out after 6 months, a year or more. The enrolled child is still entitled to attend Riverview School; however, subsequent, unenrolled children are not automatically entitled to enrol. In this instance, we review enrollments for the following year, advertise available spaces, and hold a ballot. This occurs in September for the following year. We are not currently accepting out-of-zone enrolments, except for those who were selected through the ballot in 2024. We notified the school community in September 2024, held a ballot and offered the available spots. Please see below for further information on enrolment schemes.

Enrolment Schemes - Education and Training Act 2020 ss 71 - 75
What is an “enrolment scheme” and why do some schools have them?
If a school has an enrolment scheme, it must accept all students who live within the “home zone”. Students who live outside the zone can only attend the school if they secure a place under the scheme's rules. Out-of-zone students are selected by random balloting.
Schools can only have an enrolment scheme if it’s necessary to avoid overcrowding. Sometimes, more students want to attend the school than there are spaces available. An enrollment scheme is supposed to ensure that students are selected fairly and transparently, rather than having the school choose whichever students it wants.
How are out-of-zone students selected? Education and Training Act, Schedule 20, clause 2.
If you live outside the home zone of a school, whether you can go will depend on how many places the school has for out-of-zone students. The school has to follow this order of priority to fill out-of-zone places:
- children who are accepted into learning support programmes run by the school (for example, special education or a te reo Māori immersion class) (Riverview School don't do this)
- siblings of current students of the school
- siblings of past students of the school
- children of past students of the school
- children of school staff or of the school board
- all other children who apply.
For example, if there are not enough out-of-zone places to take all children from category 2, a ballot will decide which children in category 2 will get to go to the school.
Typically, if there is space, Riverview School holds a ballot for siblings of current students of the school.
What if we move out of the home zone later on? Education and Training Act, Schedule 20, clause 12.
The school board can review your enrollment if you move out of the home zone. The board must give your parents or guardians a “review notice” and provide them with a chance to explain the situation.
If a child has been with the school for a considerable time, the school will honour their enrolment; however, siblings must go through the out-of-zone process.
Can the school cancel my enrolment? Education and Training Act, Schedule 20, clause 13.
Yes, if the school has a proper reason to believe that:
- you gave false information (for example, an incorrect address), or
- used a temporary or extended family address to enrol. (A place which is not a permanent residence of the child).
- Riverview School would communicate with whānau first to gain a better understanding of the reason for incorrect information.

Reporting to Parents
At the end of the term, we will be sending home a progress report on your child's effort and attainment during the first half of 2025. This will be supported by whānau and kaiako hui to discuss your child's progress and next learning steps. The dates for these hui will be Wednesday, 25 June, from 3:30pm to 6:30pm and Thursday, 26 June, from 1:30pm to 6:30pm. Further information about how to book an appointment will be sent out closer to the time.
On Thursday, 26 June, school will close for instruction at 12:50pm. This means that students can be collected to go home with parents at this time. Those who remain at school will be supervised in the school hall. Afternoon buses will run at the regular times.

OSCAR After School Care
OSCAR children have spent their after school time sewing sock monsters to create their own unique puppets. Jett told me "Shelley you taught me to sew", making me feel very proud. Being able to sew is a useful skill that our OSCAR children are learning.
OSCAR after school has space for new enrollments and we would love to see some new faces on our sessions. After school care is just $20 an afternoon including a yummy afternoon tea. We are open from 3pm to 5.30pm.
The school website has all our information and enrolment forms, or call Shelley on 021 296 4829 for more information or email oscar@riverview.school.nz.
