Tumuaki Talk

Kia ora koutou, Greetings to all parents, whānau, students, and staff.
As we start spring, we also head into the last week of the term, which sees the year flying away. I would again like to say a huge thank you to our whānau for the support and tamariki for being HEARTWISE.....and just awesome. I also want to share my gratitude to the outstanding team at Riverview School, as it has been a challenging year to date; however, every day we see you each support each other and the tamariki.
Room 8 Teacher:
Next week, we will say farewell to Mrs Hodgson as our Room 8 cover this term. Yet again, she has run a well-oiled class. Thank you so much Mrs Hodgson. We are thrilled to maintain some cohesion by having Mrs Henderson in the class for the remainder of the year.
Maternity Leave:
At the end of next week, we will say farewell (for now) to Miss Katrina Cooper, who will be leaving to have her baby. We look forward to meeting the new addition in the coming months and wish her all the very best. Miss Copper will return later in 2026.
Holiday Property Works:
During the upcoming break, we will see several areas fenced off for improvements to the school. We are required to restrict access to these areas due to multiple hazards.
From next term, for approximately one month, the back entrance of Kendall Road will be locked, and parents / tamariki will need to use the front entrance. This is due to the perimeter of the field acting as the entrance/exit for vehicles working on the new building site.
- New Class Build - Next to Room 10: We aim to start this project during the holidays, and the class will be relocated to the grounds. The field will have areas fenced for Health and Safety purposes, as this will be a working site. Please refer to the information later in the newsletter regarding the implications of the fencing/access points. The estimated completion time is at the end of October.
- Project 001: Room 5/6 Concrete Works, Room 12 Concrete, and Front of Hall Concrete: We are hopeful that this project will be completed this holiday. This work will involve removing three trees due to damage caused by their roots, and replacing the concrete and gardens outside Rooms 5 and 6. The raised concrete near Room 12 was removed and replaced, and some work was done outside the front of the hall. Please note that we will plant further trees to replace these.
Kapa Haka:
This was another outstanding day, which filled us all with pride. Thank you to all the staff who organised the day and the mahi the tamariki put in to be on top of their game. Well done. I think the videos show just how awesome the children were.
2025 Speeches:
Yesterday, the seniors held their speech finals in the hall. The calibre of speeches was again outstanding, and we congratulate all competitors. Congratulations to the following who were placed:
Year Six
- Harlow Stott
- Te Ahumainuku Stephenson
- Olivia McDonald
Year 5
- Nia Trass
- Koby Kitchingman
- Lilly- Anne Fossett
Year Five: Highly Commended: Manaia Teu
Rap:
- Nina Grocott
- Braxton Edwards
- Indie Gilmour
Good Luck to Nia, Koby, Harlow and Te Ahumainuku, who will represent Riverview School next Tuesday at the Kerikeri Schools Speech Competition.
Above and below the line --> Treating people right --> Being HEARTWISE:
Recently, as a staff, we have been discussing behaviour that is above and below the line. This is behaviour that is above (acceptable) and that which is below (not appropriate). The image above illustrates what we have discussed. Please feel free to discuss this with your amazing tamariki.
Term Four Athletics:
Next term, we will be holding Athletics Days for the Juniors and Seniors. We will share more information in the coming weeks.
Quiz night:
On Saturday, we had a packed-out hall for the inaugural Riverview Quiz night. I was blown away by the support from whānau and the competitiveness in dressing up tables and teams with some awe-inspiring displays. On the night we raised $2500 for the school. Thank you to all the whānau who supported this initiative, including those who donated items and money. Thanks to the Riverview School staff who volunteered to make this happen, and a big thanks to JoAnne and Elisa for organising the event. Special thanks also go to our amazing bar staff, Lucy and Frankie.
Daffodil Day:
Well done to all of the staff, whānau and tamariki for supporting this outstanding and worthwhile event. The whole school raised $974 for cancer research. Well done, and thank you.
Fuel for Schools Donation:
On Tuesday, we received a donation of guitars, a keyboard, music stands and a TV. The value of these is $2,500. We thank the scheme Fuel for Schools for this. Look at all the goodies below.

Ice Skating
Ice Skating is Coming to Riverview School
Over Labour Weekend our school hall will be transformed into an ice-skating paradise as we have a state of the art artificial ice rink surrounded by inflatable boarding set up for us to enjoy. We will also have 100 pairs of skates of various sizes, gloves, helmets and instructors available to show us how to tear up the ‘ice’.
We have chosen this activity as it is something that is not usually available in Kerikeri, is something that almost everyone can have a go at and experience some success, and it’s loads of fun.
The organisers can provide up to two 45-minute lessons per student. This instruction includes fitting the gear, how to balance, how to skate, how to fall safely, and how to stop.
This is an amazing opportunity but it does come at a cost of $16.00 per student for the 2 lessons during school hours. We have been mindful of this upcoming event and have made sure that we have not asked for payment for trips and other school activities that impact on finances. As there is a cost, this will be optional.
This letter is being sent home early so that you can plan your finances and consider if this is an activity that you are keen for your child to participate in.
There will also be a Disco Skate Night for families on Wednesday 29th October. More information will come out closer to the time.
Riverview School NFL
This year, a small group of our students played in the first-ever NFL Flag tournament. This is a modified version of American football consisting of 5 players on the field, aiming to score touchdowns against some pretty fierce defenders from the other team. It is fast, players must be tactical but also have amazing skills at catching, dodging and sprinting down the field. When on defence, players must be able to intercept, outrun and pull the flag from an opponent to stop play.
Our team of 10 were incredible. They played 6 games at the tournament held in Kaikohe on Tuesday, 9 September and scored numerous touchdowns throughout the day. Our player of the day was Karson, who not only scored multiple touchdowns but also sprinted the length of the field, a feat we could have never imagined. Our quarterbacks, Onyx and Kaide, made some exceptional passes during the day. Alizae and Hao Yang showed that they were skilled centres, while Samara and Fiadh were quick at outrunning their opponents. William did some amazing defence work, leading to numerous handovers while taking on the role of on-field coach. Our year 6 speedsters were Josh and Josh, who both showed that their skill level was on par with their running pace. There were brilliant throws, amazing catches, tricky footwork and some absolutely HEARTWISE sportsmanship.
The team was well supported by parents as well as Constable Rob, who came over to cheer us on during the day. We made the semi-finals but couldn’t quite pull off the win of the day. Our team should be super proud of the fact that we were one of only 2 teams that actually managed to score any points against the team that ultimately won the tournament and will head off to Wellington to represent Northland.
