Room 11 Learning - Ginger the Blue Tongue Lizard
Room 11 had a very special visitor. Here are few descriptions of their new friend.
It looked like he was stripey. It has brown and this weird peachy yellow with a hint of brown on it. – Piper
Some people think they are snakes because their back legs tuck under their bodies. – Matt
He was very cool and a little bit angry. – Jua
He lives in a terrarium . In winter his eating will slow down. – Liam
They eat bugs, fruit, and meat. It looks cool he eats. It looks like he doesn’t chew. – Hugo
We got to touch him. He felt weird. – Hazel
His name is Ginger. Ginger is a boy. I was so excited and I even got to touch a lizard for the first time! – Finn
Thank you Liam for bringing your blue tongued lizard to school. This gave your class mates some amazing ideas for their writing.

2025 Riverview Weed Whackers Group
This year we have partnered with Te Ahurea / Ngāti Rēhia to form a "Weed Whackers" group. We will be venturing down there once a fortnight armed with gardening gloves and sun protection and ready to fight the invasive weeds that threaten the native bush areas. The bush pathways were established as a means to teach people about native plants and how to identify different species. While we are there we will learn about these plants and how they contribute to NZ biodiversity.
Our students have learnt about some invasive plants and why these need to be removed so that our native plants can thrive. As you can see from the photos, it's not just educational, it's loads of fun too.

Tumuaki Talk
Kia ora koutou, Dobri dan, Bonjour, Hallo, Hola, Zdravstvuyte, Ni hǎo, Salve, Konnichiwa, Namaste, Guten Tag, Olá, Anyoung haseyo, Asalaam alaikum.
Greetings to all parents, whānau, students, and staff.
What a massive two weeks we have had...How Far Will Bo (and Lola) Go? Swimming, Rugby, Weed Whackers, and plenty of learning to boot.
Thank you for attending our How Will Bo Go event on the 07 and 08 March. We appreciate your company, McDonald's, Hot Chocolates / Coffee, baking, etc. It was a great 24 hours, with families socialising the entire time. The kids and staff also had a great time. Next year, we are considering a Year 3 section during the day. This would then be How Far Will Bo, Lola and ??? Go?. We will keep you informed. I want to thank all the past and present staff who volunteered throughout the 24 hours, and a special thanks to Ms Fish and Ms Matthews for staying with me for the 24 hours. Well done to Onyx for having the fastest time for 2025, of 1m57s around the 500m course. The all-time quickest time was 1m49s, achieved in 2020. I have a feeling that this will be challenged in 2026.
Farewell, for now: We are saying farewell to Miss Serena Gilmore in Room 4 at the end of the term. Serena is having a baby. We are pleased to announce that we will welcome Mrs Danielle Hadden (Elle) to the team from Term Two. Mrs Hadden will cover Serena's maternity leave and be the team leader for the Year 2 classes.
The new class is 99% complete. We can use it soon, although we have a few final touches to complete. I also had a hui with the MOE regarding another new class, which will hopefully be completed this year. We requested that it be positioned at the end of Room 10 to have a large and safe opening to the field, particularly in case of an emergency.
Greenhouse Area: Last week, we applied for a grant to re-establish our Greenhouse Area with shelving. With fingers crossed, we will soon have further development in the area behind Rooms 9 and 10. This will be done in conjunction with the Student Council and Eco-Warriors.
Inter-School Swimming Sports: I had this message yesterday, which I think says it all. "Well, Riverview School were amazing today! As always, well behaved, very supportive, and excellent results! Out of a possible 54 finals for years 4, 5, and 6… we placed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in at least 30 races...and…. We won the inter-school relay, too which comprised of 2 x year 4s, 2 x year 5s, and 2 x year 6s."
Well done to all who participated. We are very proud of you. We will post the results when we receive them.
Welcome to our new Tamariki: We would like to welcome the following new children (and their whānau) to Riverview School.
Room 1: Daaron Gwilliam, Tre Rihari-Sanft, Sienna Rihari-Sanft, Mikey Rihari-Sanft
Room 2: Briar Cumming
Room 3: Alya Hesselbarth, Olivia Galvin
Room 11: Dorothy Gwilliam, Ada Ballard
Room 13: Logan Martin
Finally, I would like to thank you again for supporting our extracurricular activities, school functions, and, of course, your children with their learning and values. These positive relationships are essential for our school. I look forward to seeing as many as possible tomorrow afternoon when Room 11 (Year 4) leads our assembly.
How Far Will Bo Go? The event.

Another fantastic 24-Hour Fun Run was held by the kids. As of 17.03.2025, the following amounts had been raised:
Year 4: $2,588.45
Year 5: $3,113.50
Year 6: $2,615.67
Total: $8,317.62
Well done to all the children who raised money. Some of the funds raised will go toward Camp and Education Outside the class. For any remaining funds, we will also seek input from each year level on what we can use the money they raised to go toward.
As Camp and EOTC is split this year, the funds raised will stay with the Year Level Groups who raised the money.

OSCAR Autumn Holiday Programme
The OSCAR Autumn holiday programme is out full of fun packed fun for the school holidays. Our programme includes trips: eeling and inline skating, . We have lots of arts and crafts, and baking. Book your child’s spot now!
General Information and Reminders:
Cellphones and Smartwatches:
The school policy is that cell phones are not allowed at school for educational purposes and should be left at home. If a child needs to bring one, they must bring it to the office before school starts and pick it up at the end of classes.
The same requirement applies to any “smart watches” with phone or recording capability. The development of this technology is very impressive, but should such expensive devices come to school, they may be misused or damaged, lost, or stolen; we strongly recommend that anything that expensive should not be at school.
Here are some quick notes for you to know about:
- Newsletters: They come home on Thursdays every odd week. We prefer to send them by email, but if you need a paper copy, please let the office know.
- The swimming pool: Each class has several lessons a week, and children will need togs, towels, and a swimming cap.
- Riverview School sunhats: These are required in Term 1 and 4 and can be purchased from the office.
- Drinks for children: We are a water-only school, so please do not send other beverages. Our water fountains all have filtered water. We recommend that children have a named water bottle and refill it from a fountain if needed.
Appointments with staff:
If you would like to meet with a staff member, please take the time to contact the school to make an appointment. Please don't show up and expect to see someone, as this may cause frustration or disappointment for you if they are unavailable. If you need to see the Principal, Deputy Principal or Assistant Principal, please ensure you make an appointment. On arrival, please wait at the front desk; someone will find them for you. Please do not walk directly to their offices.
Assembly: These are generally held bi-weekly. One week is senior school (Rooms 7, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, and 18), and the other is a junior school assembly (Rooms 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10). If you come to the assembly, please do not park in the 'Roundabout' / Pickup bay. Often, parents run late, causing congestion, frustration, and dangerous situations.

Rebel Sport Boot Drive
With winter on the way, rugby and football season is kicking off. For many families, that means gearing up with new boots - but for some, new boots can be a barrier to playing the sport they love.
That’s why Rebel Sport has teamed up with Replay NZ to launch the Rebel Sport Boot Drive this weekend, 22 & 23 March! Rebel Sport are inviting Kiwis to donate their pre-loved boots at any Rebel Sport store nationwide. As a thank-you, you will receive 20% off your next pair.
